Raising MediaWise® Kids

School Age to Adult

Program for educators

Mass media has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. We may unintentionally contribute to the negative consequences that the media have on our children, our families and our communities. In this workshop, Mike will address how children learn values, attitudes and behaviors from the mass media and offer concrete suggestions for how to use the media in a healthy way. The presentation will include practical action ideas, a short video, and questions and answers.

Program for parents

America’s children now spend over 40 hours a week in front of a screen. These screens are more influential than most of us think. In this presentation, Mike explores the impact of media in light of new information about child development. Mike will pay particular attention to the impact of media on the growing “culture of disrespect” and the “seven building blocks for academic success.” He will explain why it is imperative to address the role of media in children’s lives and, in addition, he will present concrete strategies for raising MediaWise Kids.

Program for school-age audiences

Modern media is a powerful teacher, but what is it teaching? Using a curriculum developed by the National Institute on Media and the Family, Mike helps kids identify how to make healthy media choices. The presentation will include practical action ideas, a short video, and questions and answers.
